Richard Battles Obituary

Richard “Slick” D. Battles, 78, of Conneaut Lake, passed away on Tuesday, September 8, 2020, at Rolling Fields Elder Care Community in Conneautville, after a period of failing health.

Richard was born in Butler Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania, on April 4, 1942, a son of the late Ralph E. and Sarah (Exley) Battles.

He had lived in the Sandy Lake Area for many years, attending Lakeview High School, until he moved to Harmonsburg in 1959.

Following his graduation from Linesville High School in 1960, Richard enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in Alaska until he was honorably discharged in April of 1963.  On October 4, 1963, he married Carol A. (Jamison), and she survives.  In his younger years, Dick enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, listening and dancing to music from the 50’s -60’s, family gatherings, and especially spending time with his grandchildren and great granddaughter.  He also enjoyed the Pittsburgh Pirates, Steelers, NASCAR, keeping in touch with old friends, working on his trucks and cars, and riding his motorcycle.  He had a great sense of humor and will be greatly missed.

Dick was employed for over twenty-two years at Rockwell International in Ashtabula, Ohio, and retired from Country Mold and Machine in Andover, Ohio.  Dick was a member of the Linesville American Legion Post 462, the Conneaut Lake Historical Society, and the North Shore Boat Club.

Survivors include his loving wife of almost 57 years, Carol A. Battles; two daughters, Kristi L. Sherman and her husband, James, of Harmonsburg and Kelli L. Peters and her husband, John, of Conneaut Lake; four grandchildren, Jason Peters and wife, Amber, of Linesville, Zachary Sherman and wife, Abbie, of Harmonsburg, Julia Peters (Dillon Wheeler) of Linesville and Brandon Sherman (Amanda Sharpless) of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; great granddaughter, Cecilia R. Sherman; two brothers, Roy (Pat) Battles of Greenville and Don (Pat) Battles of Goshen, Indiana; a sister, Pat (Mark) Featherolf of Conneaut, Ohio; two sister-in-law’s, Bonnie DeSalle of Industry, Pa and Connie Battles of Avon Park, Florida; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a great grandson, Owen B. Peters, and a brother, Ivan Battles.

A celebration of his life will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 26, 2021 at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7842, 6913 Gehrton Road, Linesville with Rev. Jim Tubbs officiating.  Full military honors will follow.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Royal-Coleman Funeral Home, 6028 U.S. Hwy 6, Linesville.

Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Harmonsburg.

In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorial contributions may be made to Crawford County Humane Society or a charity of the donor’s choice.
