Sherman W. Ferguson, 93, of Hartstown, passed away Saturday, December 12, 2015, at the Meadville Medical Center.

Born April 18, 1922, in Genoa, West Virginia, he was the son of Jasper and Susie Asbury Ferguson.  He was previously married to Ellen Deal in December of 1944 and she preceded him in death in 1998.  He married Wilma McElhaney on September 24, 1977; she survives.

He served in the U.S. Army Quartermaster with a rank of Tech 3 rd Grade from September 24, 1942 until he was honorably discharged on February 8, 1949.  During this time, Sherman served in the Pacific Theatre.  For three years after the war he escorted for returning war casualties.

Sherman owned Sherm’s United Gas Station in Greenville and Sherm’s Sporting Goods in Greenville.  He was a manager for the Midway Hotel in Hartstown.  Sherman also worked for Dahlkempers in the Sporting Goods and he retired from Meadville Malleable Iron Company.

He was a member of the Linesville First Baptist Church where he had served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher.  He attended the Comrades Sunday School class and was a prayer warrior.

Sherman was a 7 th degree member of Atlantic Grange 244.  He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed hunting, reading, gardening and playing cards.

Survivors include his loving wife of 38 years, Wilma Ferguson; four daughters, Cathy Spargo and her husband, Rodney, of Greenville, Rebecca Conover and her husband, Sam, of Greenville, Joyce Ferguson and her companion, Lawrence Breauchy, of Mercer, Sherma Jean Kain of Hermitage; two step-children, Thomas McElhaney and his wife, Debbie, of Meadville and Elaine Root and her husband, Michael, of Townville; 11 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; 9 step-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Erma Mills of Wayne, West Virginia.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons-in-law, Linwood Ecker and James Kain; a grandson, Benjamin Kain; step-son, David A. McElhaney; five sisters; and a brother.

Calling hours will be Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m. at Royal-Coleman Funeral Home, 6028 U.S. Highway 6, Linesville.

The funeral service will follow the calling at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home with Pastor Art Barnes and Pastor Joel Weck, of the Linesville First Baptist Church, co-officiating.

Burial with full military honors provided by Huidekoper Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2006 will be in Rocky Glen Cemetery in Adamsville.
