Richard T. Swafford, 79, of Linesville, passed away, Friday, July 1, 2011 at Meadville Medical Center after a courageous one year battle with cancer.
Born January 20, 1932 in Linesville, he was the son of James Garfield and Hazel Snyder Swafford. He married Nancy McDowell and she preceded him in death on May 12, 1985. He later married Marion McLean on June 4, 1986; she survives.
He attended Graham Elementary and Linesville High School and was of the Baptist Faith.
Richard worked at Union Carbide and later Elkem Metals Company in Ashtabula, Ohio as an overhead crane operator and a train engineer.
He proudly served in the US. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1952 until honorably discharged in 1954.
Richard enjoyed being outdoor hunting and loved watching birds, turkey, and dees. He liked watching NASCAR and boxing. He enjoyed riding motorcycles and his ice boat when he was younger. He had a passion for ultealight planes. He especially loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildsen and cherished the time he spent with them.
Survivors include his wife, Marion J, Swafford; a daughter, Colette L. Swafford of Meadville; two step-daughters, Kathy J. Brown and her husband, Fd, of Shippenville, Pa and Carol D. Myers and her husband John of Linesville, four grandchildren, Tammy Walker, Charles Hancuff IV, Tawnya Shaffer, and Jared Slaughter; four step-grandchildren, Steve Brown, Danielle Stanley, Matthew Buzikowski, and Jamie Brows; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Eunice Hanna of Harrisville, Pa, Mary Walther of Linesville, and Bonita Hopkins of Hemphill, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Nancy, a step-daughter, Reva Smalley, a sister, Pearl Buraun, and a brother, Hubert Swafford.
Calling hours will be Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Royal-Coleman Funeral Home, 6028 US. High Linesville.
‘The funeral service will be 2 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home with Pastor Art Barnes of the Linesville First Baptist Church officiating, Full military honors will be conducted by Huidekoper Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 2006. Burial will be in Penn Line Cemetery.
