Richard Lee Moyer

Richard Lee (Dick) Moyer, 95, formerly of Harmonsburg, passed away on Thursday, November 19, 2020, at Wesbury in Meadville.

Born October 25, 1925, in Akron, Ohio, he was the son of Rodney and Bessie Crawford Moyer.  He married his high school sweetheart Ruth A. Burchfield on May 29, 1947 in Canton, Ohio.

Dick was a graduate of Minerva, Ohio High School. He served our country in the United States Army from 1943 until he was honorably discharged in 1947 from Germany. For over 40 years, he worked in sales and was employed by Firch Baking Company.

He was a member of the Harmonsburg United Methodist Church, the Sertoma Club, the Pine Masonic Lodge 498 in Linesville and the National Umpires Association.

Dick was an umpire and coach for over 50 years for high school baseball, softball and Legion baseball. He and Ruth loved to spend winters at the beach in Florida, playing golf and going to shows. Dick was a big sports fan especially Ohio teams and was known to make a bet or two! He was a game player whether it was in Las Vegas, Atlantic City or just an evening of cards. As a member of Sertoma, he was also the Bingo caller for many years as well as the “Santa” for the Jimmy Moore Christmas Party. Dick loved music and was a huge Lawrence Welk and “Rat Pack” fan. He was fun loving and loved his grandchildren and along with Ruth followed all their sports and activities growing up. Dick will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include two sons, Richard Moyer and his wife, Sydney, of Meadville and James R. Moyer and his wife, Kathy, of Linesville; 8 grandchildren James Zakostelecky (Becca), Sean Zakostelecky (Tina), David Moyer, Leslie Ferguson (Joe), Samantha Moyer, Lauren Moyer, Ginger Moyer and Thomas Moyer, 12 great-grandchildren; and a niece, Karen Parsons (Bill).

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 72 years, Ruth Moyer; a son, Thomas R. Moyer; a daughter, Rebecca L. Zakostelecky; a brother, Paul Moyer; and a sister, Lois Moyer.

A private funeral service will be held.
