Joseph Charles Matelan, 92, formerly of Linesville, passed away, Wednesday, November 21, 2012, at Golden Living Center Western Reserve in Erie.   For the last four years he had be living with his son in Erie.

He was born as a leap year baby on February 29, 1920 in Rankin, Pa, the son of the late Philip and Teresa Matelan.  On October 12, 1947, he married Sally Ann Evanchec at St. Mary’s Church in Rankin; she preceded him in death on February 21, 2006.

At age 13, Joseph and his family purchased a farm on Hartstown Road in North Shenango Township which provided the entire family many good memories. He had attended North Shenango School in Espyville. Joseph served our country as a Sgt. in the United States Army Air Corps.  During World War II he was a Morse code operator and was stationed in North Africa.

He retired from Rockwell International in Ashtabula, Ohio.  He and his wife owned Isaly’s Store in Linesville from 1960 until 1984.

Joseph was a lifelong member of St. Philip Church in Linesville where he was very active in the church.  He was the First Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus Council 6037.  He recently had attended St. George’s Church in Erie with his family.

He was a member of the Linesville American Legion Post 462 and the Linesville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7842.

Joseph enjoyed boxing, baseball, fishing, boating with family and friends and loved music especially singing.  He was very handy and enjoyed fixing various things and working around the house.  Joseph was very giving and generous and loved helping other people.  He cherished the time he spent with his family especially his grandson, Adam.

Survivors include a son, Brian Matelan and his wife, Tanya, of Erie; a grandson Adam; two step granddaughters, Madalyn and Caitland; two sister-in-laws, Sr. M. Bernadette, a nun with the Daughters of Divine Charity in Akron, Ohio and Margaret Evanchec of Swissvale; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sally Ann Matelan; an infant brother, Michael Matelan; and four sisters, Ann Gomrack, Twins Katie Kovac and Sadie Osborne, Francis Onderick.

Calling hours will be Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Royal-Coleman Funeral Home, 6028 U. S. Highway 6, Linesville.  A rosary service will be conducted at 4 p.m. and a prayer vigil will be at 7 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Philip Roman Catholic Church, 401 S. Mercer St., Linesville, with Father Steve Anderson as celebrant.

Burial with full military honors provided by the Huidekoper Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2006 will be in St. Philip Cemetery.

The family suggests memorial contributions can be made to St. Philip Church.
