John (Calvin) Thayer, 83, of Linesville, passed away, Friday, March 18, 2011 at Rolling Fields in Conneauwille after a courageous five year battle with cancer.
Born January 27, 1928 in Meadville, He was the son of John L. and Annabelle Wheeler Thayee He married Mildred McMillin on May 5, 1951 at the Linesville First Baptist Church.
He was a lifelong resident of Conneaut Township where he was the fifth generation to live on the family farm. Calvin was a 1946 graduate of Linesville High School. In 1978, he graduated from Northwest Police ‘Training School in Meadville.
For 25 years, he worked for Linesville Boro and seticed in 1991 as Chief of Police. He was a chaster member of the F Joseph Thomas Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #108 in Meadville. Calvin was a certified sewage enforcement officer for many years for several municipalities and retired in 2007.
He was a member of the Linesville First Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon, on the boaed of trustees and as a Sunday school teacher. Calvin loved spending time with his family especially his grandchildren, He enjoyed being outdoors on his farm and with his animals.
Survivors include his loving wife of 59 years, Mildred Thayer, three children, John Thayer and his wife, Cyndie, Jane Brown and her husband, Tom, and Gary Thayer and his wife, Robin, all of Linesville; six grandchildren, Robert ‘Thayer, Amy Haeck, Brian Brown, Jodie Blood, Tiffany Thayer and Kelly Thayer; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews,
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Aleta Thayer and Bonita Hathaway Dickey and one nephew, Lyle Hathaway.
Calling hours will be Monday from 4 to 7 pm. at Royal-Coleman Funeral Home, 6028 US. Highway 6, Linesville. Additional calling houss will be on Tuesday from 10 to 11 am. before the service.
