David Lynn Oates, 45, of Jamestown, passed away on Thursday, April 27, 2017, at UPMC Shadyside, in Pittsburgh, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born July 9, 1971, in Meadville, he was the son of Richard and Terrie Whitcomb Oates.

He was a 1989 graduate of Linesville High School.  David served our country in the United States Navy Seabees from 1989 until honorably discharged in 1994.  He had served in Scotland, Spain, Somalia and Guam.

David was a self-employed contractor in the area for many years.  Recently, he had worked for the South Shenango Township.

He was a member of the Jamestown Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5424.  In his spare time, David loved being outdoors fishing and hunting.

Survivors include his parents, Richard and Terrie Oates of Linesville; his partner, Vangie Rice of Jamestown; his maternal grandmother, Phyllis Whitcomb of Greenville, South Carolina; two brothers, Kevin Oates and his wife, Mandy, of Hartstown and Trevor Oates and his wife, Johna, of Conneaut Lake; a sister, Lori Gelvin and her husband, Josh, of Greenville; eleven nieces; one nephew; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Chuck and Mamie Rice of Jamestown.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Robert and Marleah Oates and Rev. Lloyd Whitcomb.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Royal-Coleman Funeral Home, 6028 U. S. Highway 6, Linesville.

A memorial service will follow at 7 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Jonathan D. Wagner of the Calvary Baptist Church, Conneautville officiating.  Full military honors will be provided following the service.
